Under the supervision of the Chief of Emerging Issues Branch of the Division for Sustainable Development, the incumbent carries out the following functions:
1. Contributes to the preparation of analytical and policy reports on emerging sustainable development issues by: a) Providing input to research papers and working outlines for the Secretary-General reports; b) Preparing background materials for the reports, including analytical papers on specific sustainable development topics; and c) working as part of a team to consolidate various inputs into cohesive, analytically solid and user-friendly reports.
2. Undertaking analysis of emerging issues in the context of sustainable development by: (a) keeping abreast of latest economic, social and environmental developments, collecting inputs and ideas from different sources within and outside DESA and the UN System; (b) collaborating closely with professional staff in the preparation of discussion papers; (c) maintaining working contacts with professionals within DESA and the UN system and with non-UN experts to explore opportunities for cooperation and initiate joint activities; (d) assisting in the organization of expert group meetings, panels, round tables etc on emerging issues of sustainable development.
3. Contributes to providing assistance to developing countries in strengthening their capacities to implement sustainable development goals related to emerging issues of importance to sustainable development by: (a) Participating in missions on sustainable development issues, usually as part of a team; (b) organizing expert group meetings, briefings and training seminars for national experts; and (c) drafting project proposals for ad hoc activities and technical assistance projects.
4. Undertaking background research and preparing briefing materials, talking points and speech notes, as requested by the Chief of Branch.
5. Providing substantive servicing to the Commission on Sustainable Development and other intergovernmental fora and meetings as required.
6. Carries out any other tasks as required.
